LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Raiders showed flashes of offensive brilliance Sunday at Allegiant Stadium, but costly turnovers, defensive struggles, and explosive plays by the Detroit Lions proved too much to overcome. Despite a career-highlight performance from wide receiver Jauan Jennings and three touchdown passes from rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the Raiders fell to Detroit 41–31.
For head coach Big Country, the defeat represented another frustrating chapter in a season filled with missed opportunities and inconsistent execution.
The Raiders finished with 307 yards of offense, including 294 passing yards, but three interceptions ultimately overshadowed an otherwise productive afternoon.Mendoza Shows Promise but Turnovers Continue
Fernando Mendoza delivered one of his more productive performances of the season, completing 18 of 33 passes for 313 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. His 54 percent completion rate and 79.4 passer rating reflected an afternoon filled with both impressive throws and costly mistakes.
Detroit struck first when safety Yasir Abdullah intercepted Mendoza and returned the football 61 yards for a touchdown with 3:38 remaining in the opening quarter.
The defensive touchdown immediately placed Las Vegas behind and demonstrated the importance of protecting the football against an opportunistic opponent.
However, Mendoza responded during the second quarter, connecting with running back Ashton Jeanty for an eight-yard touchdown with 2:17 remaining. With only nine seconds before halftime, Mendoza found Mike Washington Jr. for a 12-yard touchdown. Although the extra-point attempt failed, the Raiders entered halftime trailing just 14–13.Jennings Delivers Spectacular Performance
The brightest offensive performance belonged to Jauan Jennings, who dominated Detroit's secondary throughout the afternoon.
Jennings finished with six receptions for 179 yards and one touchdown, averaging an impressive 29.8 yards per reception.
His biggest moment came during the third quarter when Mendoza connected with him on a spectacular 76-yard touchdown strike.
Jennings showcased his ability to stretch the field and create explosive opportunities, accumulating 94 yards after the catch.
Jeanty successfully converted the ensuing two-point attempt, temporarily giving Las Vegas renewed momentum.
Washington Jr. also contributed four receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown, while Jeanty added three catches for 21 yards and another score.
Rashee Rice recorded one reception for 24 yards, while Brock Bowers contributed one catch for seven yards.Despite these contributions, the Raiders struggled to establish their rushing attack, finishing with only 13 rushing yards.Detroit Capitalizes on Raiders' Mistakes
Detroit quarterback Jared Goff directed a balanced Lions offense that produced 285 total offensive yards, including 151 rushing yards.
The Lions also benefited from outstanding special-teams execution.
Jameson Williams returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, delivering another devastating blow to Las Vegas.
Williams later caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Goff, while Sam LaPorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown also contributed receiving touchdowns.
Detroit kicker Jake Bates connected on field goals from 46 and 45 yards, helping the Lions maintain control. The Raiders' defense struggled to contain Detroit's rushing attack, surrendering 151 yards on the ground.Defensive Standouts Provide Encouragement
Despite allowing 41 points, several Raiders defenders delivered noteworthy performances.
Quay Walker recorded eight tackles, including six solo stops, three tackles for loss, and an interception.
Jeremy Chinn led Las Vegas with 11 total tackles, while T. Johnson contributed nine.
Nakobe Dean finished with six tackles and two tackles for loss.
Maxx Crosby registered four tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack, providing consistent pressure along Detroit's offensive front.Special teams also produced encouraging numbers, particularly Eric Stokes, who accumulated 157 kickoff-return yards on four attempts, including a 70-yard return.
Donte Thornton Jr. added 52 kickoff-return yards.Big Country Faces Difficult Questions
Las Vegas made one final push when Michael Mayer scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 51 seconds remaining, but the comeback fell short.
The Raiders accumulated 533 total yards when offensive and return yardage were combined, compared with Detroit's 431.
Nevertheless, three turnovers and an ineffective running game prevented Las Vegas from capitalizing on its explosive passing attack.
For Coach Big Country, the challenge remains finding consistency on both sides of the football.Mendoza demonstrated that he possesses the arm talent to generate big plays, while Jennings established himself as a dangerous receiving threat.
But until the Raiders eliminate costly interceptions, strengthen their rushing attack, and prevent explosive opposing scores, competitive performances will continue ending in disappointment.
Final Score: Detroit Lions 41, Las Vegas Raiders 31.
